Relationship Counselling Peterborough

Helping Couples Reconnect, Repair, and Rebuild

Relationships can bring deep joy — but when they’re not working, they can also cause some of life’s most painful struggles.

You might feel hurt, betrayed, or exhausted by constant arguments. Perhaps the passion has faded and your relationship feels more like hard work than partnership. Or maybe you feel stuck — trapped in the same fights, with no idea how to move forward.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Relationship counselling in Peterborough can help you and your partner find new ways to communicate, reconnect, and heal.

When to Seek Relationship Counselling

Couples often come to me when they are:

  • Too hurt or upset to see a way forward
  • Stuck in repeating cycles of conflict and silence
  • Struggling with betrayal, mistrust, or resentment
  • Feeling disconnected — like housemates instead of partners
  • Longing to bring back intimacy, passion, and fun

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by relationship problems like these, support is available — and change is possible.

How I Can Help

About Me.

I’m Matthew McGinty (MNCS, Accredited), a counsellor specialising in relationships and couples work.

Like many people, I’ve faced challenges in my own relationships. That experience, combined with my professional training, helps me support couples with both empathy and practical guidance.

In counselling, I’ll give you both a safe, non-judgemental space where you can:

  • Speak openly without fear of criticism or dismissal
  • Learn practical communication tools that make arguments less destructive
  • Understand the hidden patterns that keep you stuck in gridlock
  • Rebuild trust and intimacy at a pace that feels right for you

Benefits of Relationship Counselling in Peterborough

Working together, you and your partner can:

  • Reconnect — restore closeness and intimacy
  • Strengthen — rebuild trust and passion in your relationship
  • Calm — reduce stress and manage conflict more constructively
  • Grow — develop healthier patterns of communication
  • Balance — share purpose and direction as a couple

My Approach: Gottman and Beyond

I use the Sound Relationship House framework, developed by John and Julie Gottman after 30 years of research into what makes relationships thrive.

Alongside Gottman’s proven methods, I also integrate:

  • Attachment theory — understanding the deeper needs driving conflict
  • Non-violent communication — expressing needs without blame or criticism
  • Love languages — finding simple ways to show care and appreciation

This integrative approach means we can tailor counselling to your unique relationship — practical, compassionate, and research-based.

What Clients Say

Jody Stout

Our sessions with Matt have been really useful. He is very knowledgeable and has helped us to learn lots of strategies to strengthen our communication with each other. His recall of discussions we've had is incredible considering how many people he must work with a week! I would highly recommend any person or couple who need help to contact Matt.

Raymond Anderson

Matt has provided a supportive environment to allow me to fully express and discover in a way that I felt totally comfortable. I highly recommend Matt and his approach to help you on your journey of self-discovery.

FAQs About Couples Counselling in Peterborough

Here are some of the most common questions couples ask about relationship counselling in Peterborough.

Do both partners have to attend?

Couples counselling works best when both partners attend together, but if your partner isn’t ready, individual sessions can still help you gain insight and strategies.

What if my partner won’t come to counselling?

It’s common for one partner to be hesitant. Sometimes, when they see the benefits you’re experiencing, they choose to join later. You can begin on your own.

Do you have specific training in relationship counselling?

Yes.
I have completed extensive training in relationship and couples therapy, including:

  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy – Level 1, 2020
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy – Level 2, 2021
  • Gottman Sex Therapy Training, 2022
  • Family Systems Therapy, 2021
  • Working with Self-Sabotage and Relationship Patterns, 2023
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), 2018 — supporting couples in building emotional flexibility and shared values
  • Mindfulness Teacher Training, UK College of Mindfulness Meditation — integrating mindfulness-based approaches into relationship work

I also bring over a decade of counselling experience helping couples and individuals improve communication, rebuild trust, and strengthen emotional connection.

Is couples counselling only for marriages?

No. Relationship counselling in Peterborough is for any couple — married, living together, dating, or separated but wanting to improve communication.

Can couples counselling really help if we argue all the time?

Yes. In fact, many couples come to counselling because conflict feels constant. Sessions help you understand the patterns behind your arguments and practise healthier ways of communicating.

How long will it take to see changes?

Some couples notice improvements in just a few sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support, depending on the depth of issues.

Does couples counselling work for same-sex or multicultural relationships?

Yes. I welcome couples of all sexualities, genders, and cultural or religious backgrounds. The principles of relationship counselling apply to every couple, and I adapt my approach to respect your unique experiences and values.

Do you offer online couples counselling as well as in-person in Peterborough?

Yes. I work with couples both in-person and securely online, so you can choose the option that fits your lifestyle.
