The Different Types of Therapy for Mental & Emotional Problems

Mental and Emotional Therapy Help

With all that’s going on in the world, it can easily cause stress and panic. Even in the calmest of times, life throws enough curve balls at us every day for it to feel overwhelming. In difficult times, it’s perfectly normal to seek help from a form of therapy.

Therapy, or counselling, offers people the chance to share their problems, concerns, and worries in a safe, supportive environment with a trained mental health professional. Depending on your circumstances, there are many different forms that therapy can take. In this blog, we are going to take a look at some forms of therapy to give you an insight:

Stress Reduction Counselling

Life is full of stress. It’s almost impossible to avoid it. We all have to deal with it to some degree and we can all manage different amounts of stress in our lives. We do so daily. For many, it’s not a problem, but there will always come a point when it gets too much for anyone. When that happens, stress reduction counselling can help.

SRC is a form of cognitive behavioural therapy and is based on the principle that stress is intensified as a result of some deeply ingrained, negative thought processes. These can then have a detrimental effect on how we think, behave and ultimately respond in stressful situations. Counselling will work on addressing these thought patterns in favour of more positive and healthy ways of thinking you can use for the rest of your life.

Emotional Therapy

It could be argued that all therapy is emotional therapy, but this is, in fact, a very specific form of counselling. Sometimes referred to as ‘emotion-focused therapy’, this looks at the emotions you may be feeling that are key to your identity. Many people who undertake this will be avoiding unpleasant emotions or lack emotional awareness. This can cause mental anguish and emotional repression. During this type of counselling, much more than any other form, the patient and the therapist collaborate in an ongoing active process to help interpret their emotional experiences with the patient often leading.

Couples Therapy

Counselling doesn’t have to be a solo experience. Couples therapy, as the name suggests, works with couples to talk through their differences. It is also known as relationship counselling. As you would expect, it helps couples, regardless of gender, to help them to understand and repair their relationship with each other.

This form of therapy will work with you as a couple, but also, at times, individually. Not all the work will take place during the sessions either. You might both be given assignments to complete at home that may dictate future sessions, all designed to rebuild your relationship.

Mindfulness Counselling

Mindfulness has become very popular in recent years. The practice of paying attention on purpose and being aware of the moment you’re in has taken off and helped many people. When it comes to mindfulness counselling, sometimes referred to as mindfulness-based therapy, the impetus is less about reacting to someone (or something), but instead focuses more on accepting without judgement.

By combining mindfulness techniques like meditation and breathing exercises, with elements from cognitive behavioural therapy (aka CBT), it aims to break the negative thought patterns you may find yourself having.

These are just some of the different types of therapy that are available for various mental and emotional problems. There are many more, but regardless of which one you need, we all need some help sometimes, so there’s no shame in asking for it.
